Hot button tips from a health care lawyer

Author(s):

Amanda Hill, J.D., explains how physicians can stay out of legal trouble by tightening documentation, monitoring billing practices and creating a culture where staff feel empowered to flag risks early.

Compliance issues don’t usually start with fraud — they start with sloppiness. In “Hot button tips from a health care lawyers,” part of Medical Economics’ June 2025 Practice Academy, Amanda Hill, J.D., explained how physicians can prevent risk by getting ahead of it.

Hill, a health care attorney with 25 years of experience and founder of Hill Health Law Group, said most legal trouble stems from vague processes, poor communication and unchecked billing. She urged doctors to monitor what’s being billed under their name, teach their teams what to watch for and document everything clearly and consistently.

Don't wait for trouble. A few smart systems — and a culture that encourages people to speak up — can stop legal headaches before they start.
