10 ways health care is working against physicians

Fact checked by: Keith A. Reynolds

Coding scrutiny, payment gaps and a push for price caps show up across Trilliant Health's annual look at where U.S. health care is headed.

Trilliant Health's 2026 Trends Shaping the Health Economy Report, released Oct. 6, describes the U.S. health economy as a "tragedy of the commons." Each payer, hospital, drugmaker and practice acts in its own financial interest, and the system as a whole delivers little health for what it costs, the report argues.

The Tennessee-based analytics firm built the 141-page report mostly from its national all-payer claims database, health plan price transparency files and provider directory, plus government and industry sources.

Many of its findings land on physicians, from how visits are coded and paid to who is likely to cap prices next.
