Q:I'm thinking about bringing aboard a certified public accountant to handle accounting and office management. Can this work?
A: Probably not. You need a manager who understands the ins and outs of running an office, as well as how to supervise and motivate staff. You're not likely to find a CPA who has that expertise. A well-run practice typically has an expert office manager and farms out the accounting responsibilities to a CPA firm that has experience working with physicians. Often, it's wise to have a separate bookkeeper as well, so the office manager can focus on more important issues.
