Lumeris and Google Cloud announced a strategic partnership aimed at tackling one of health care’s most pressing challenges: the widening gap between the demand for primary care and the capacity to deliver it. The collaboration will build Lumeris’ Tom platform on Google Cloud’s AI infrastructure, with the goal of increasing access to high-quality primary care for millions of Americans.

According to Lumeris, annual demand for care in the U.S. exceeds 2.5 billion hours, but fewer than 500 million hours are currently available. The shortage is contributing to missed diagnoses, delayed treatments, and suboptimal outcomes for hundreds of millions of people.

“AI is transforming health care in new and profound ways, including expanding access to more people,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “By combining Google Cloud's AI capabilities with Lumeris' decades of primary care insight, we can provide doctors and nurses with the AI support and insights they need to help improve care for their patients.”

Built by Lumeris and powered by Google Cloud’s AI models and infrastructure, Tom is described as the industry’s most advanced AI-powered Primary Care as a Service solution. It functions as a proactive care team member embedded directly into clinical workflows, autonomously executing best next actions that increase capacity, reduce administrative burden, and improve access.

“Tom is designed to be the best partner and care team member a physician could ever have,” said Mike Long, chairman and CEO of Lumeris. “Under the complete supervision of the physician, Tom is embedded in primary care workflows, autonomously executing the best next action with appropriate guardrails for each patient—performing hundreds of tasks from checking in on patients, to scheduling screenings and monitoring medications, to conducting outreach and escalating issues.”

John Doerr, chairman of Kleiner Perkins and a board member at Lumeris, emphasized the urgency of the problem. “The human toll of the primary care shortage is staggering—missed diagnoses, delayed treatments, and inferior outcomes,” Doerr said. “Now, two world-class companies — Google and Lumeris — are bringing their unique capabilities together to help solve this crisis. We have both the means and the resolve to dramatically improve care for hundreds of millions of Americans.”

A new era of AI-driven primary care

The Tom platform is purpose-built for scale, with Google Cloud’s secure infrastructure enabling it to support care coordination, chronic disease management, and preventive health services at a national level. A key element of the platform is its ability to turn fragmented data from disparate electronic health records, insurance systems, and consumer sources into real-time, actionable insights.

“Tom’s ability to surface best next actions within clinical context and workflows will help close the loop between payers and care teams,” the companies said in a joint statement.

Tom also leverages Google Cloud’s Gemini Flash and Chirp3-HD AI models to create intelligent, conversational experiences that enhance clinical care. The platform is designed with a shared commitment to responsible AI—integrating human oversight, transparency, and safety throughout its operations.

“Health care delivery as we have known it for generations is now fundamentally changed forever,” said Long.

As part of the partnership, Lumeris will continue to evolve Tom’s capabilities alongside Google Cloud’s rapid AI advancements, ensuring that the platform remains at the forefront of innovation in primary care delivery.
