If AI makes physicians faster, who gets paid for the time it saves?

Two-thirds of physicians expect AI fluency to boost their earnings, according to Doximity's 2026 physician compensation report. Liability, reimbursement and a contested new JAMA paper all sit between that expectation and a bigger paycheck.

Nearly a quarter of physicians expect artificial intelligence (AI) to increase their total compensation over the next 12 months, and two-thirds believe that staying current with AI tools will give them a meaningful earnings advantage over colleagues who don't, according to Doximity's 2026 Physician Compensation Report, released Aug. 25.
