The staffing squeeze: Which roles can really go remote?

Fact checked by: Keith A. Reynolds

Rihan Javid, D.O., J.D., explains how practices can rethink which roles must stay in-house — and which can safely move offsite.

Rihan Javid, D.O., J.D., co-founder and CEO of Edge, talks about why highly specialized roles like billing coordinators shouldn’t be limited to in-house roles, especially as staffing shortages surge. These roles are often strong candidates for remote work, while direct patient-facing positions still need to be on-site.

He explains how turnover can be a prompt to reassess your staffing model: deciding which tasks can be shifted to remote team members, then using the savings to better support the in-person staff who handle vitals, rooming and hands-on care. The practices that stay flexible with role design and funding, he argues, are the ones that weather the staffing squeeze.
