Robert E. Oshel, PhD, an adviser to the Public Citizen Health Research Group, explains the most significant result in a new study.

In August 2023, Public Citizen, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit consumer advocacy group, published the report, “Ranking of the Rate of State Medical Boards’ Serious Disciplinary Actions, 2019-2021.” Report coauthor Robert E. Oshel, PhD, said there is tremendous variation among the 50 states to consider serious disciplinary actions against physicians. Overall there was a decline in numbers of disciplinary cases against doctors compared to the 2017 to 2019 study period covered in an earlier report.
