
Long COVID: Will care be available?
A physician can navigate the health care system, but what about patients?
In a stressed medical system, patients dealing with long COVID may not know how to get access to the health care they need. They may not know what’s available. Monica Verduzco-Gutierrez, MD, FAAPMR, said she’s privileged to understand the health care system as a physician, but not everyone has that prior knowledge, and specialty clinics have long waiting lists. Verduzco-Gutierrez specializes in brain injury medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation at UT Health San Antonio, and is a volunteer leader and member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. As a physician and as a long COVID patient, Verduzco-Gutierrez has become an advocate for medical and policy solutions to help patients deal with the disease.
