Biden prostate cancer diagnosis: A physician expert offers his first impressions

Fact checked by:

The former president likely will have drug therapy to lower his testosterone levels, but there are other treatment options.

Former President Joe Biden has revealed he has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

In this video series, Daniel Isaac, DO, MS, shares his insights about that disease and what has been reported publicly so far. Isaac is an assistant professor of hematology/oncology at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and an oncologist/hematologist for the Karmanos Cancer Institute at McLaren Greater Lansing.

Surgery could be a treatment option, but it is not the only one, and drugs to lower the former president’s levels of testosterone may be a better option. As a world leader, the president of the United States has access to excellent health care. While it may seem unusual for cancer to go undetected in a sitting president, it can happen, Isaac said.

And how important is it for primary care physicians to get involved in cancer care? It’s vitally important, Isaac said, because of their good influence on patients to advocate for prevention, screening, and the best treatment options.
