Michael Blackman, M.D., MBA, says the return on AI in health care isn’t just financial — it’s also about quality and efficiency.

Michael Blackman, M.D., MBA, chief medical officer of Greenway Health, spoke with Medical Economics at the MGMA Leaders Conference 2025 in Orlando about how physicians should think about return on investment when adopting artificial intelligence (AI) tools. He said the value of AI extends beyond dollars and cents — it includes gains in efficiency, quality of care and even clinician well-being.

“For some of these things, there may not be a dollar return, but there may be a return in quality of life and improvement of quality,” Blackman said.

He emphasized that smaller practices in particular can benefit by automating routine administrative tasks like billing, coding and task management, freeing staff to focus on higher-value work.
