Susan Dentzer, president and CEO of America's Physician Groups, explains how to make ACO risk work for small medical practices.

Medical Economics sat down with Susan Dentzer, president and CEO of America's Physician Groups (APG), to discuss their latest report, "Medicare Done Right."

Dentzer addresses a major concern for some independent and most small practice physicians: the risks of participating in two-sided accountable care models.

"These are complicated exercises. These are not natural acts for small practices," she said.

But she emphasizes that, while going at it alone may be unsustainable, success is possible through the right partnerships — including large ACOs, enablers, independent practice associations and management services organizations.

Dentzer argues that, with support, even smaller practices can take on risk and thrive in shared savings models.
