Susan Dentzer, president and CEO of America's Physician Groups, explains why we need a better understanding of Medicare Advantage.

Medical Economics sat down with Susan Dentzer, president and CEO of America's Physician Groups (APG), to discuss their latest report, "Medicare Done Right."

Dentzer explained that we need a more nuanced conversation about Medicare Advantage (MA). The program isn't monolithic. While some plans rely on frustrating prior authorizations and opaque denials, others deliver excellent results through delegated risk models that empower health care providers, she said.

She warned against demonizing the entire program or misrepresenting tools like risk adjustment.

"We've got to build on the aspects of [MA] that are better," she said, "and get more of the program to look like these optimal instances where there are these provider-plan partnerships that really do drive to optimal care."
