The 10 best states for health care in 2026

Where a practice sits on the map shapes almost everything about how it runs. The share of patients who show up insured, how long they wait for a specialist, whether the hospital across town has an open bed. None of it is under a physician's control, and all of it lands on the schedule.

WalletHub ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia on 44 measures of health care cost, access and outcomes in its 2026 report, published July 27. The three categories carry equal weight at 33.33 points each, and the underlying data was collected as of June 29.

The rankings measure what patients experience, not what practices earn. The two are hard to separate. Insurance coverage rates set payer mix. Physicians per capita set panel size and referral wait times. Outcomes measures increasingly set the benchmarks written into value-based contracts.
