Chicago or New York? Pepperoni or sausage? Americans are passionate about their pizza. To slice away at the mystery, TripAdvisor recently analyzed its multitude of pizza reviews to deliver piping hot answers to where to find the best pies.

Chicago rates as the top city for pizza lovers. “Travelers come from all corners of the country to sink their teeth into Chicago’s deep dish,” says Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications for TripAdvisor.

Even though Chicago ranks as the number one US pizza destination, Brooklyn, New York’s Juliana’s Pizza sizzles to the top as the US’s best pizza place. “This eatery tantalizes taste buds with its thin crust pizza that is charred to perfection under a coal-fired hearth,” raves a TripAdvisor reviewer.

To bite into Chicago’s doughy masterpiece, TripAdvisor lists three must-try places: Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder; Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria, River North; and Giordano’s. Curiously, none of those eateries nor any others in Chicago make it into the survey’s top 10 US pizzerias.

New York City, however, delivers three restaurants to the top 10. Along with the top cheese, Juliana’s Pizza, the survey opens the box on two outstanding places in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village: Fourth-rated Keste in the West Village and Tenth-rated John’s Pizzeria on Bleeker Street.

Surprisingly, Anchorage, AK, serves up the third-best pizza place in the US. For those headed that way, stop at Moose’s Tooth Pub and Pizzeria for its noted Amazing Apricot pie topped with apricot sauce, cream cheese, carrots, and chicken. Not for purists, but supposedly, delicious.

The favorite toppings? Pepperoni piles on first, then sausage and coming in third is mushroom.
