The Top 7 Trending Travel Destinations

Much of the country has been battered by snow in recent weeks, and with a solid month of work now under our belts after winter vacation, many people are starting to turn their minds to… more vacation.

The first question to answer: Where to go?

The travel website Kayak.com is trying to help users answer that question in a number of ways. The site just published its 2015 “Travel Hacker Guide” with a bevy of data based on user searches and travel bookings. The site tells users the most popular destinations in the US, the destinations with the best deals, and the hottest beaches (ever important in these winter months).

However, the guide also includes a list of “trending” destinations—that is, destinations that have seen the largest growth in searches over the past 12 months.

For instance, the top US city on the “trending” list is better known for a TV show than for its tourism industry. And while the cities on the list span 4 continents, only 2 are in Europe, and both are in countries hit hard by the 2008 recession.

What follows are the Top 7 trending cities on the list. Included with each page are the year-over-year increase in search activity as well as the highest and lowest median monthly airfares to the city. The medians are based on flights originating in the US and Canada. All of the data come from Kayak.
