Physicians in private practice — or not: How many are left?

A leader of the American Independent Medical Practice Association discusses new AMA findings about the state of private practice physicians.

The Policy Research Perspectives paper, “Physician Practice Characteristics in 2024: Private Practices Account for Less Than Half of Physicians in Most Specialties,” published by the American Medical Association, found that 42.2% of American doctors remain in private practice. Is that figure accurate? Either way, it indicates a trend of the decline of independent physician practice in the United States. Paul Berggreen, MD, a gastroenterologist and president and board chair of the American Independent Medical Practice Association (AIMPA), offers this perspective.
