ACP taps Hicks as next CEO, citing dedication to health care quality

The next chief executive of the American College of Physicians (ACP) said he is humbled to serve when internal medicine is in a time of challenges and opportunities across health care.

This week, ACP announced LeRoi Hicks, M.D., M.P.H., MACP, will become the college’s new CEO and executive vice president, with his term starting July 6.

"I am humbled to be selected to lead ACP at a time when internal medicine physicians are navigating profound challenges and unprecedented opportunities in a rapidly evolving health care environment," Hicks said in a news release.

Hicks succeeds Darilyn Moyer, M.D., who announced her retirement plans in 2025 and is recognized as the longest-serving female physician to lead a medical specialty society in the United States.

"I'm confident leaving ACP in Dr. Hicks' capable hands," Moyer said. "His aptitude for business leadership, commitment to health equity, and focus on patient-centered care will guide ACP into its next chapter of growth and innovation."

The ACP's Board of Regents chose Hicks following a national search. Hicks becomes the first African American physician to lead the ACP, which represents internal medicine physicians and is the second-largest physician group in the United States.

“Dr. Hicks has built a national reputation for advancing equity in health care, with a strong focus on addressing health care disparities and the social determinants of health,” ACP’s official announcement said. He is board certified in internal medicine and in 2024 earned ACP mastership, one of the college’s highest honors bestowed to recognize demonstrated excellence and distinction in medical practice, leadership, research or education. Along with Hicks’ dedication to health care quality, he has served as mentor to the next generation of physicians.

Hicks currently is president of ChristianaCare's Wilmington Campus in Delaware, where he oversees strategy, finances and daily operations. He joined ChristianaCare in 2014 and rose through several leadership roles, including vice chair of the Department of Medicine, physician leader for the hospital system's acute medicine service line, and chief medical officer of Wilmington Hospital. He was named campus executive director and president in 2023.

Before ChristianaCare, Hicks served as division chief of hospital medicine at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. He also served as president of the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Hicks earned his undergraduate degree from Howard University in 1991 and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Mount Auburn Hospital, where he also served as chief resident, and later completed a fellowship in general medicine and faculty development at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He earned his master’s degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.
