Most physicians: States with the greatest numbers of doctors

News
Article

Population equals patients, so physicians practice where the people are.

Among the 50 states, it appears the numbers of physicians are proportional, more or less, to the state populations – doctors work where the patients are. There are 11 states with at least 40,000 physicians among their populations, but just two states have more than 100,000, according to the latest figures from the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB).

In July FSMB released its “Census of Licensed Physicians in the United States, 2022.” The report, compiled every two years since 2010, outlines demographics of the U.S. physician workforce.

This slideshow lists the 11 states with the most physicians, at least 40,000 per state.
