What tech tools are driving better patient outcomes?

Independent practices say EHRs lead the way — but telehealth, patient portals and analytics tools are driving measurable results, especially in mental health care.

A new survey from AdvancedMD, the cloud-based health care software provider for independent practices, offers a fresh look at how independent practices are using technology to improve patient care — and what tools are making the biggest difference.

Surveying 206 private practice employees via an online form in April, 2025, the study found electronic health records (EHRs) were the most widely adopted and most impactful technology solution.

Telehealth tools — while implemented by fewer respondents — ranked second for perceived impact on patient outcomes.

Nearly 70% of survey respondents said they use EHR data to personalize care plans, and 60% said they apply analytics to improve treatment strategies. Mental health care emerged as the top area where technology had the biggest positive impact, followed by preventive care and chronic condition management.

At the same time, practices face rising patient expectations. Two-thirds of respondents reported that patients still schedule appointments by phone, even as demand grows for more digital, personalized and accessible care options.
