The latest government data

The federal government closely tracks, and regularly reports on, the number of American deaths and the reasons for them. The latest report, issued in March 2024, breaks down 2022 mortality data in categories such as overall life expectancy (77.5 years); death rates by age groups, race and ethnicity; and leading causes of infant mortality.
