Within the discussion of whether or not to sell to a hospital, the panelists discuss the need for clinical integration and collaboration, which has created strange bedfellows.

Todd Rodriguez, partner with Fox Rothschild, said he’s even seen third-party payers acquiring practices.

“One of the other trends we’re seeing … is doctors in private practice grouping up,” he says. “I think being in a larger group clearly gives you greater financial depth to afford some of the things you need to afford to be a sophisticated player in the market.”

Looking to group up and stay in private practice may be better, and Rodriguez admits that he doesn’t think many hospitals know what they’re doing when it comes to managing practices.
