Planning How You'll Spend Retirement

Planning for retirement isn't just about money. It's also about imagining how you'll want to spend your post-work lives.

Let’s talk about a different type of retirement planning. I’m not talking about the money part. You know: the savings accounts, the investments, and everything that goes with it. I’m talking about the fun part... what do you want to when you retire? Have you thought about what you want to do with yourself? This can be a time when you pursue the things you’re passionate about. It’s your time, and planning how you want to spend your time will be time well spent. Moreover, it’s fun to do.

Sit down around with your spouse, get out a pen and paper, and make a list for the two of you.

“What do you want to do when you retire?” Answering this question should be a fun exercise for you both, and there are no right or wrong answers. Just write down anything and everything that comes to mind. Remember you will be retired, you will have all the time in the world to do whatever you want.

Do you have some recreational activity that you’re passionate about? Do you want to travel, or spend time with the grandkids, nieces, and nephews? What about volunteering, mentoring, traveling, reading, writing, biking, boating, golfing, fishing, camping, gardening? This is playtime, so maybe you want to learn to play an instrument and literally play all day.

The point is, retirement can be an absolutely amazing 30-year vacation. If what you envision is truly your passion, you’ll plan it, take action, and then make it happen, because you’ll have the time.

The next step is to figure out how to have the financial means to have the retirement of your dreams.
