Housing Markets with Most Foreclosures

Article

While the nation's foreclosure filings are down, some housing markets are still struggling. The city with the most foreclosure filings reported a 140% increase in year over year.

While the nation’s foreclosure filings are down 23% from a year ago, some housing markets are not only lagging behind, but foreclosures are up an alarming amount from April 2012.

RealtyTrac’s latest foreclosure data showed that the national foreclosure activity was at the lowest since February 2007. However, despite the nationwide decline, states reported increasing foreclosure starts from the previous month.

Among the top 14 housing markets with the most foreclosures, five of them are Ohio cities. All of Florida’s five entries made it to the top 10.

And while the majority of the markets in the top 10 saw increases in foreclosure filings year over year, some did report decreases. For instance, Las Vegas-Paradise, Nevada, actually had a -18% change from April 2012 and a -12% change from March 2013. However, it has been a bumpy ride for the Las Vegas area as it reported an increase in foreclosure filings from December 2012 to January 2013.

And while the cities on these lists usually stay the same—maybe just with an order change—the housing market with the most foreclosures came out of nowhere. Properties with filings increased by almost 100% month to month and close to 150% year over year.
