In a third annual ranking of health insurers, Aetna came out on top of 137 national, regional, and government payers in terms of its business dealings with doctors. In fact, the Hartford, CT-based insurer was first in two key categories: It took the fewest number of days to pay claims (27) and had the lowest denial rate (5.9 percent). Only Cigna topped Aetna, and only slightly, in resolving claims on the first attempt (95.8 vs. 95.6 percent, respectively). The rankings were established by athenahealth, which examined roughly 30 million claims from more than 12,000 medical providers.
