NIH Updates Testing, Treatment Guidelines During Co-circulation of Influenza and COVID-19

Slideshow

The new guideline section stresses that testing is the only way to accurately discriminate between the 2 viruses and advises on influenza vaccination and treatment.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) on October 22, 2020 made updates to its COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines that provide information for clinicians in communities where influenza viruses and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are co-circulating.

Titled Influenza and COVID-19, the new section in the guideline discusses:

  • Influenza vaccination for those with COVID-19
  • Clinical presentation similarities/differences between the 2 viruses
  • Potential for co-infection with influenza and SARS-CoV-2
  • Testing for influenza and SARS-CoV-2 in patients with acute respiratory symptoms
  • Treatment of influenza in the setting of co-circulatling SARS-CoV-2
