In the Jocular Vein

The great leveler

One of the nurses in our GI lab likes to joke with patients. One day she escorted a patient into the endoscopy room and said, "Okay, Joe, get your buns on the table." He quietly obeyed.

Then she admired his unusual ring. "They gave me that when they made me a cardinal," he said. Indeed, our patient was the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
