In the Jocular Vein

Showing a Freudian slip

After a ceremony honoring the dean of the medical community, a young doctor and his considerably older wife approached him. The young man turned to his wife and said, "Mother, this is Dr. Bleming, the most distinguished member of our association." The older physician bowed elegantly and said, "Madam, I am delighted to meet the charming mother of an outstanding son."

She replied coldly, "I am his wife, not his mother." Still bowing and smiling, the older man replied, "Damn all men who go around calling their wives 'Mother'!"
