CCHIT to develop specialty criteria

Article

HHS has given the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology extra funding to beginning addressing certification of EHRs designed for medical specialties and specialty care settings. "We can only tackle two or three specialized areas during this next year, but these will pave the way to do even more in the future," says CCHIT chair Mark Leavitt, MD.

The organization's first step will be to establish a method of determining which specialties should receive priority. Among the factors to be considered: how much criteria development work would be required; the readiness of the specialty to participate in development; and "the potential positive impact certification would have on EHR adoption in the specialty."
