Our internal medicine group would like to open a pharmacy downstairs from our practice. Do self-referral laws prohibit doctors from owning a drug store?

Q. Our internal medicine group would like to open a pharmacy downstairs from our practice. Do self-referral laws prohibit doctors from owning a drug store?

A. No, but if you intend to refer patients to the pharmacy, it must be owned by the practice itself, and not by the individual physicians.
