Do Americans trust their physicians? A slideshow

News
Slideshow

Gallup poll ranks 23 professions for honesty and ethical standards.

As of 2023, physicians were not at the top of the list of most honest and ethical professions.

But, they’re not at the bottom, either. That slot is reserved for members of Congress, with just 6% of Americans considering representatives’ honesty and ethical standards as very high or high, according to Gallup’s 2023 Honesty and Ethics poll.

Overall, Americans’ ratings of 23 various professions are lower than they have been in recent years. Just about every profession has declined since 2019, with labor union leaders being the only ones that have maintained a steady rating.

Here are the top dozen most trusted professions, with comparisons to 2022 and 2019, if available.

The percentages show the amount of people who said credibility was very high or high, when asked: Please tell me how you would rate the honesty and ethical standards of people in these different fields – very high, high, average, low, or very low.

All data comes from “Ethics Ratings of Nearly All Professions Down in U.S.,” by polling and research firm Gallup, which began measuring honesty and ethics of various professions in 1976.
