Best policies for remote patient monitoring – a slideshow

Bipartisan Policy Center issues guidance on best ways to use emerging technology.

Now is the time for physicians, patients and policymakers to draft best practices and rules for remote patient monitoring (RPM).

In January 2024, the Bipartisan Policy Center published “The Future of Remote Patient Monitoring,” a report with policy recommendations to make the most of new technology that collects patient data where they are and transmits it for review by physicians and other clinicians. The devices “have the potential to revolutionize clinical treatment and bridge gaps in care for hard-to-reach populations,” the report said.

But experts still have questions about its effectiveness, paying for it and whether the technology keeps private patient health information.

This slideshow presents a dozen recommendations for lawmakers, federal regulators, physicians and patients to consider, under three headings:

  • Ensuring Appropriate Service Coverage
  • Improving Equity
  • Ensuring Data Security and Privacy

Summaries are based on the report by the Bipartisan Policy Center.
