Suicide prevention

The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention, with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has published the 2024 “National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.” It’s a whole-of-society approach to address gaps and offer multiple actions to address an issue with no single solution. The National Strategy is here, the Federal Action Plan is here, and if you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 or chat 988Lifeline.org.

Advising FDA

Did you know the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has 50 technical and scientific advisory committees and panels? Members include experts from the scientific and the general public. On June 13, FDA will hold a listening session on the composition of advisory committees, ways to improve member experiences and ensuring public awareness and understanding about the panels. More information is here.

Cosmetic transmission of HIV

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has documented what appears to be the first transmission of HIV through cosmetic injection services with contaminated blood. Four women who received platelet-rich plasma microneedling – so called “vampire facials” – at a New Mexico spa were diagnosed with HIV infection. The spa was an unlicensed facility that did not follow recommended infection control procedures or maintain client records. NPR has this report.
